EADS Defence & Security Systems at Farnborough International Air Show 2006

Farnborough, 17 July 2006

The Defence & Security Systems Division (‘DS’ or the ‘DS Division’) is the main pillar of EADS’ defence and security activities. By combining EADS’ Missile Systems (EADS' share in MBDA), Defence and Communications Systems (DCS), Defence Electronics (DE), Military Air Systems (MAS) (and EADS’ share of the Eurofighter programme), as well as services activities within one division, EADS has focused its defence business to better meet the needs of customers requiring integrated defence and security solutions for Network Enhanced Capabilities.

At Farnborough, DS presents its innovative products and high-tech solutions at the EADS stand (Hall: 04, G16). All DS Business Units are presenting integrated solutions for defence and security needs with a special emphasis on avionics, security solutions and air systems. On the stand, EADS is presenting models, interactive presentations and simulation highlighting its extensive Large Systems Integration capabilities, including an interactive showcase for Network Enhanced Capabilities – Network Centric Operations Simulation – NetCOS.

A major highlight at this year’s air show is EADS’ UAV Demonstrator model, on display at the EADS stand. A technology demonstrator for the development of future agile, autonomous and network-capable unmanned mission systems, the demonstrator is made entirely of carbon-fibre composites and operates autonomously – monitored from a ground station for flight safety reasons only. Designed as an electrical aircraft (with the exception of the landing gear where electronic actuators are used instead of hydraulic components), it is equipped with a triplex flight control and navigation unit and has an open and modular avionic structure, simplifying the installation and integration of various sensors. Through this demonstrator, EADS – in cooperation with European partners – is gathering fundamental know-how for operationally mature next-generation UAV products.
Invaluable is the practical experience gained in the field of unmanned systems interoperability in line with the latest NATO criteria and with consideration for autonomous operation within a "Network Centric Operations" environment. With two more Tactical UAVs, the "Orka" and the "Scorpio", both shown as full-scale models, Military Air Systems underlines its expertise in the ever-increasing market for unmanned systems for military, law-enforcement and global security applications.

With production and final assembly lines in Germany and Spain, EADS is the major active shareholder within the Eurofighter consortium. This prominent role within the programme and the ongoing introduction into service is reflected by exhibits at the EADS stand comprising of an interactive scale model, depicting the advanced technological and operational features of the multi/swing-role combat aircraft. Due to the four-nation identity of Eurofighter, the aircraft is on display at the Eurofighter GmbH stand, as well as at the other main partners’ and suppliers’ stands. To underpin the in-service status of the Eurofighter Typhoon with currently 85 production aircraft delivered to the air forces of the four core nations, this year’s flying display for the first time will be performed by the Royal Air Force's Typhoon Display Team.

Simulation and Training

The Network Centric Operations Simulation (NetCOS) demonstrator is a multifunctional simulation system designed to develop and test new defence concepts and architectures.
NetCOS, a “European laboratories network”, can connect Ministries of Defence, European Defence Agency, and NATO, incorporating all of the latest simulation technology in order to reproduce realistic military crisis-management scenarios. Within the framework of Network Enhanced Capability, NetCOS simulates the data received from multiple sensors (day / night optronics, electronic support measures, radar, human intelligence, etc.) in a synthetic environment in order to create a precise and reliable picture of the tactical or strategic situation. This simulation capability makes NetCOS an indispensable tool for testing and perfecting innovative defensive systems and helps EADS meet today’s real military challenges. NetCOS demonstrations will take place on the EADS stand.

EADS is also offering complete aerial target services to customers throughout the world. Detailed knowledge is required of the different threat scenarios and the respective air defence systems deployed in the relevant theatres before one can design and equip a reliable aerial target in the required configuration. The broad range of EADS drones such as the Direct Target family Do-DT 25, Do-DT 35 and Do-DT 55 is capable of simulating virtually all types of threats. By combining the Do-DT 25 with the Do-DT 55, it is for the first time possible to deploy a qualified stand-off weapon simulator in aerial target operations. For the staging of manned aerial target operations, Learjet 35/36 and Falcon 20 aircraft are available, along with the required towing equipment.

Since 1988, EADS has been the prime contractor for the supply of target drones to the NATO Missile Firing Installation (NAMFI) in Crete. At NAMFI, EADS has already staged more than 1,000 successful drone operations for the armed forces of Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Germany, Greece, the Netherlands, Norway and the USA, providing full service support. The DO-DT 35 target drone is displayed on the EADS stand.

Avionics and Self-Protection

For helicopters and wide-body aircraft, EADS is offering its avionics and self-protection solutions. Including the latest technology in countering infrared-guided man-portable missile threats, Defence Electronics is displaying its "Flash" DIRCM demonstrator system and its missile warning sensor for fighter aircraft MILDS-F. For the first time, EADS Defence Electronics displays its newly developed Airborne Missile Protection System (AMPS) which can easily be retrofitted to legacy helicopters. Following a unique new joint approach in the field of mission and logistics planning, the Operations Support Station of the Tiger and NH90 helicopters for the first time combines the operative control and logistics support in one single planning system. It is currently being introduced into the German Army Aviation.

EADS Test & Services

EADS TEST & SERVICES (UK) LTD offers a complete design, development, manufacturing and customer support capability. Using pioneering innovative solutions for the management of obsolescence in legacy test systems they have been at the forefront of the development of international open standards from the test industry. Recent accomplishments include the receipt of a U.S. Navy contract for two additional aircraft carrier-based Jet Engine Test Instrumentation (JETI) systems - bringing the total systems provided to the U.S. Navy to 17 – and a U.S. Navy contract to develop applications software for the Shaft Engine Test Instrumentation (SETI) programme that enables EADS' Shaft Engine Test System to support the new VH-71A U.S. Presidential helicopter.

With revenues of about € 5.6 billion in 2005 and roughly 23,000 employees across nine nations, EADS Defence & Security Systems Division (DS) forms the defence and security pillar within EADS. As a Large Systems Integrator, it offers integrated systems solutions to the new challenges confronting armed forces and global security. It is active in the areas of manned and unmanned integrated combat and mission air systems, including related training services, and in missile systems, battlefield management systems for all branches, global security solutions, secure networks, defence electronics, sensors and avionics, as well as related services.

EADS is a global leader in aerospace, defence and related services. In 2005, EADS generated revenues of € 34.2 billion and employed a workforce of about 113,000.
