Alberto Fernández - Head of EADS Military Transport Aircraft Division - appointed CEO of Airbus Military Company

Madrid, 28  September  2001

The Executive Committee of Airbus Military Company (AMC) has appointed Alberto Fernández as its CEO to replace Alain Flourens.

Alberto Fernández will maintain his current responsibilities as Chairman and CEO of EADS CASA and Head of the EADS Military Transport Aircraft Division.

The appointment strengthens the role of the Military Transport Aircraft Division in managing the new A400M European military transport aircraft programme.

The A400M is the largest defence programme envisaged in Europe in the next few years and involves at least seven governments which have committed urgently to the acquisition of 212 aircraft, for delivery between 2007 and 2015. The contract is worth around 20 billion euros.

The A400M is also expected to be exported worldwide.

"The Madrid-based Military Transport Aircraft Division of EADS will provide AMC with the resources required to manage the programme", said Alberto Fernendez. "In the area of industrial and technical functions, it will manufacture the horizontal stabiliser and will be responsible for the final assembly line of the aircraft in Seville. Sizeable investments are earmarked for setting up what will be one of Europe's most modern aircraft assembly plants. There we will produce the A400M along with the other military transport aircraft from EADS: the existing CASA C-212, CASA CN-235 and CASA C-295".

At the same meeting, the Executive Committee expressed its gratitude to Alain Flourens, Alberto Fernández's predecessor, for his effective and positive work to date; Flourens is transferring to a senior management position within the Airbus organization in France.

With 24.2 billion euros in revenues and 100,000 employees, EADS European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company is Europe's largest aerospace company and the second-largest in the world. Its activities range from commercial aircraft, helicopters, space, military transport and fighter aircraft to defence technology and services. Among other stakes, EADS owns 80% of Airbus, 75% of space company Astrium, 100% of helicopter manufacturer Eurocopter, 43% of Eurofighter and 37.5% of missile company MBDA.
