German federal commission inspects POLYCOM - the radio network in Switzerland based on TETRAPOL

Ulm, 08 July 2002

A commission comprising eleven representatives from nine German Länder (federal states) and headed by Germany’s Central Office for the Preparation of the Introduction of a Federal Uniform Digital Voice and Data Transmission System (ZED) recently inspected the POLYCOM radio network in Switzerland. POLYCOM is a trunked radio network that is based on the TETRAPOL standard and intended for government agencies and security and rescue organizations.

This standard for digital radio networks was officially assessed for the first time during the commission’s visit to Switzerland. The representatives of the Federal Government and the Länder came to the conclusion that TETRAPOL meets the requirements for the federal digital radio network that has to be set up for the country’s authorities and organizations with security responsibilities by the year 2006.

To prepare for the three-day fact-finding mission, the commission put together a catalogue of all the functions and performance features it wished to see tested on site.

The representatives of the Federal Government and the Länder spent two days as POLYCOM’s guests in the Schwarzenburg training centre near Bern. All details of the POLYCOM network's functions were run through and tested. The third day of the visit was reserved for a visit to the control center of the police force in Frauenfeld (canton of Thurgau). The experts witnessed the functions and performance of the TETRAPOL network first hand in practical operation and were very impressed by what they saw. The POLYCOM network clearly demonstrated that TETRAPOL meets the requirements for public safety and security forces as well as those of the Schengen Agreement.

EADS Telecom is number one in the world in secure digital wireless networks thanks to its expertise in this field.

At present, more than 60 TETRAPOL networks are in deployment or operation in 28 countries, all using Tetrapol technology approved by the ITU (International Telecommunications Union) and the Police Cooperation Group (formerly the Schengen Group). Many of these networks cover entire nations: RUBIS (police), ACROPOL (police) in France, SIRDEE in Spain, PEGAS in the Czech Republic, SITNO in Slovakia, PHOENIX in Romania and IRIS in Mexico.
