EADS, the global aerospace and defence company, has awarded the EADS UK Technology Masters Awards to students from the University of Liverpool and Cranfield University, at an event held late last week at the Houses of Parliament.

The students were handed their £5,000 Awards by Robin Southwell, CEO of EADS UK. He was joined by Louise Ellman, MP for Liverpool Riverside and Nadine Dorries, MP for Mid Bedfordshire, the constituency MPs for the University of Liverpool and Cranfield University respectively.

The EADS UK Technology Masters Awards, which was created last year, has been formed to provide support to British students studying for a one-year MSc programme in the fields of aerospace and space. Commenting on the Awards, Louise Ellman MP said, “I am delighted that three Liverpool University students have been awarded EADS UK Technology Masters Awards. This not only represents excellence on their part but is a tribute to Liverpool University, which is renowned for its excellence in engineering.”

In its second year, six Awards have been made, three each at the University of Liverpool and Cranfield University. Both Universities have excellent reputations in one or more of the relevant fields and have demonstrated that the additional funds from the Awards will be invaluable in attracting MSc students to their courses.

After undergoing a thorough selection process co-ordinated by the Universities, the following six, top-class students have been selected:

Cranfield University

  • Diane Doran – MSc in Aerospace Dynamics
  • Christopher O’Brien-Organ – MSc in Aerospace Vehicle Design
  • Stephen Greenland – MSc in Astronautics and Space Engineering

University of Liverpool

  • Owen Mills – MSc in Engineering Application of Lasers
  • Neilson Bedwell – MSc in Mechanical Systems Engineering
  • Kwok Wing Ng – MSc in Advanced Engineering Materials

Commenting on the Awards, Professor Gareth Padfield, James Bibby Professor of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Liverpool said: “We are proud that EADS has chosen to award students of the University of Liverpool their prestigious award for a second year. This is testament to the quality of our students and the demand for qualified aerospace engineers in the UK. Our ability to attract more students into the fields of aerospace and defence has been greatly supported by last year’s awards and we look forward to continuing this relationship with such a well regarded and forward thinking company.”

Robin Southwell added:

“It was a pleasure to meet some of the best young British engineers and scientists who will be developing the next generation of aviation and space technology. EADS is constantly on the look out for talented young people like these to progress. We are delighted and committed to investing in the future of British aerospace engineering. “
