Ludwig Bölkow Award for Journalism 2006

  • Awards for Süddeutsche Zeitung Wissen, Deutschlandfunk and ProSieben
  • Special award for the Braunschweiger Zeitung

Munich, 01  November  2006

The Ludwig Bölkow Award for Journalism, established by EADS, is being presented for the third time this year. It recognizes outstanding reporting in the field of aerospace in three categories: print media, radio and television. The jury, chaired by the head of the German School of Journalism (DJS), has announced the winners of the Ludwig Bölkow Award for Journalism 2006:

The jury voted unanimously to award each of the following reports a prize valued at € 5,000: Fliegende Flunder (Flying Flounder) by Alexander Stirn, published in Süddeutsche Zeitung’s Wissen (Knowledge) magazine, the radio programme titled “Flying like a bird – kite builders realize Otto Lilienthal’s dream” by Rolf Krauter, broadcast on Deutschlandfunk, and the television report “Painting Airbus” by Harald Stocker, shown in the Galileo magazine programme on ProSieben. A special award of € 2,000 has been given to the Braunschweiger Zeitung for its science series Campus, in which trainees in a special teaching project undergo preparation for a career in scientific journalism.

The Ludwig Bölkow Award for Journalism is a writers’ prize that is granted to eligible candidates throughout Germany on an annual basis. Awards are given for reports appearing in the daily press, in magazines, on radio and on television that vividly describe and explain topics from the complex and often complicated world of aerospace or the fascination of flying to a lay public. The awards will be presented at a ceremony in the historic Oberschleissheim Hangar on 23 November 2006 by Stefan Zoller, member of EADS’ Executive Committee and Ludwig Bölkow’s widow, Eleonore Bölkow.

Ludwig Bölkow, to whom the journalism award is dedicated, was a crucial driving force in the technological and industrial development of the aerospace sector in Germany. He played a decisive part in the founding of Airbus, the building of the European launcher Ariane and a large number of European missile programmes. Bölkow laid the foundation for helicopter manufacturer Eurocopter. In the final years of his life he dedicated himself primarily to environmental protection issues and research into alternative forms of energy. As an entrepreneur he fostered his employees and encouraged them to strive for their own achievements. MBB, the company that Bölkow had founded, was well ahead of its time in terms of social benefits and opportunities for vocational training.

The members of the jury, along with Ulrich Brenner, head of the DJS, are Klaus Peters, former press spokesman of MBB, Peter Pletschacher, President of the Aviation Press Club (LPC) and Director of Aviatic-Verlag, Mercedes Riederer, Editor-in-Chief for Radio at Bayerischer Rundfunk, Peter Sartorius, for many years Managing Editor of the Süddeutsche Zeitung and holder of numerous journalism awards, Prof. Horst Schmidt-Bischoffshausen, formerly of the research department at EADS, Christoph Steinkamp, head of the Factual department at ProSieben and Volker K. Thomalla, Editor-in-Chief of Flug-Revue.
