El proyecto ASTRO+ forma parte del programa Acción Preparatoria de la Comisión Europea para la Investigación en el área de Seguridad o Preparatory Action for Security Research (PASR), que reúne a 22 socios provenientes de las autoridades públicas, industria, universidades, instituciones y equipos de expertos de nueve países europeos. Coordinado por EADS Astrium, el proyecto ASTRO+, está diseñado para demostrar cómo las capacidades y tecnologías espaciales pueden mejorar la seguridad de los ciudadanos europeos. El ejercicio de simulación de una situación de seguridad llevado a cabo en Polonia en febrero de 2006 demostró cómo ASTRO+ puede ayudar a cubrir las necesidades de operaciones terrestres facilitando el acceso a los datos procedentes de los satélites, utilizando equipos de altas prestaciones y garantizando la coordinación entre los participantes para mejorar la eficacia en general del sistema de gestión de crisis. EADS Astrium tiene una vasta experiencia en tecnologías que son vitales para garantizar que los sistemas de seguridad planificados en Europa sean completamente eficaces. La compañía ha desarrollado soluciones completas y totales de telecomunicaciones vía satélite, observación y navegación para satisfacer las necesidades de las operaciones en marcha. Estas soluciones integradas aportan no sólo el sistema (segmentos espacial y terreno), sino también los servicios, cubriendo áreas como la cartografía y las comunicaciones. ASTRO+ es un primer paso para demostrar de forma concluyente la importante contribución del segmento espacial en el campo de la seguridad. Deberá servir para allanar el camino hacia un programa tecnológico y de investigación más amplio, apuntando a establecer sinergia con otros proyectos R&T (Research and Technonolgy, Investigación y Tecnología), aplicaciones comerciales y del ámbito de la defensa, y crear redes entre la industria espacial y la investigación para desarrollar aplicaciones multidisciplinarias.
The Skynet 5A satellite, launched in March 2007, provides secure beyond line of sight communications to the UK Ministry of Defence. The satellite is owned and operated by Paradigm, a subsidiary of Astrium Services. The Skynet 5 military satellites, developed by Astrium, deliver secure global satellite communication services for the UK. Three new Skynet 5 satellites are due for launch in 2007 and 2008 respectively, providing a major upgrade of the fixed terrestrial infrastructure, networks and management systems in the UK and provision of a range of new terminals. Skynet 5 is providing a range of services for purchase or lease, such as delivering the highly successful "Welfare" Communications Service designed to keep troops serving abroad, on land or at sea, in touch with their friends and families back at home through voice and internet connectivity. The Skynet 5 contract extends through to 2018.
