The A400M is a next generation military airlifter and is being designed and manufactured for eight NATO allies. This high-speed turboprop aircraft fully meets the European Staff Requirement (ESR) as a strategic and tactical transport aircraft.

In May 2000, the UK Government announced that it would acquire a fleet of A400M aircraft making the RAF the first customer firmly committed to the A400M.

In May 2003, the A400M reached a major milestone with the formal launch of the programme when OCCAR, representing the NATO customer nations, and Airbus Military signed a contract for the acquisition of 180 aircraft. There are 192 firm orders from 9 nations: Germany: 60; France: 50; Spain: 27; United Kingdom: 25; Turkey: 10; South Africa: 8; Belgium: 7; Malaysia: 4; Luxembourg: 1.

First flight is scheduled for 2008 and the first aircraft will be delivered to customers in 2009.
