EADS Surface-to-Air Missile Operations Center SAMOC passes quality assurance test

The Surface-to-Air Missile Operations Center SAMOC produced by the EADS European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company has demonstrated its full functionality in a quality assurance inspection conducted by the Federal Office for Defense Technology and Procurement (BWB), thus passing an important milestone on its way to operational service with the German Air Force. SAMOC has been developed at the Ulm site of the EADS Defence Electronics and Telecommunications business unit.
During the inspection by the BWB, the fault-free functioning of the software with which this mobile antiaircraft operations center is equipped was tested on original hardware and also under conditions involving real air situations, EADS announced on Wednesday . For this purpose, the SAMOC operations center was set up at the EADS site in Ulm and connected to the German Air Force airspace control network, with links being established to the higher airspace control centers and to operations centers at the tactical level. At the same time, members of the Air Force received training on the air defence command post.
"SAMOC demonstrates the enormous improvements in the performance of existing defence systems that can be achieved through the well-targeted use of network technologies as well as modern command and control systems," commented Dr. Stefan Zoller, Head of the Defence Electronics and Telecommunications business unit at EADS.
The Surface-to-Air Missile Operations Center enables various air defence systems such as PATRIOT, HAWK or Roland to be efficiently coordinated. This is achieved by processing air situation information delivered by various sensors and the higher-level control centers and then transmitting the processed data to all the associated units via high performance communications links. This networking of the air defence systems and control centers considerably increases the overall effectiveness of the air defence. SAMOC can be deployed in standard mobile cabins and, thanks to its flexibility, is especially suitable for multinational missions or operations, even outside Germany With the successful quality assurance inspection, the basic development of the mobile surface-to-air missile operations center has now been completed. The next step will be the field test, which is to be conducted at Air Defence Wing 3 in Ahlhorn/Germany.
