EADS: A Total Service Provider For Military Aircraft

EADS Military Aircraft incorporates all capacities and abilities of the EADS European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company (Munich/Madrid) for the design, development, integration, production and logistics support of high-performance fighter aircraft, transport aircraft, airborne reconnaissance and command, control and communication systems, trainer aircraft and related ground-based equipment. EADS Military Aircraft is the national systems leader for the flying weapon systems of the Air Forces and the Naval Air Arms of Germany and Spain, including retrofit and upgrade programs.

To fulfill these tasks, EADS Military Aircraft with a work-force of currently 7,400 is based on three locations in Southern Germany and one location in Spain: With 2,800 employees at the end of 2000, Ottobrunn near Munich is headquarters and holds responsibility for development and logistics/product support. The Augsburg plant (1,900 employees) is in charge of the production and assembly of aircraft components, including spare parts. Manching (roughly 1,600 employees) is performing final assembly, flight test, and repair, maintenance and retrofit activities. In Getafe near Madrid (approx. 1,100 employees) development and final assembly work, aircraft maintenance and overhaul as well as upgrades are performed.

In the year 2000 EADS Military Aircraft reported a turnover of Euro 1.4 billion with an order backlog of approx. Euro 4.1 billion.

The current programs of EADS Military Aircraft include in the fighter aircraft segment

  • Eurofighter. EADS Military Aircraft is responsible for systems design (e.g., Flight Control System, ident-attack system, sensor fusion, hydraulics) and flight-testing of three prototype aircraft, single source for the series production of the center fuselage section, the right wing and leading edge slats, final assembly of 180 aircraft for German Air Force as well as 87 aircraft for the Spanish Air Force. Partnered with Alenia Aerospazio and BAE Systems. First deliveries of Eurofighter production aircraft in 2002.
  • EF-18A Hornet. Technical Assistance for embedded operational software, design, develop, suppport and implement a Midlife Upgrade program for the Spanish EF-18 fleet.
  • Tornado IDS fighter-bomber. Delivery of approx. 1,000 center fuselage sections, final assembly of more than 320 production aircraft and mid-life upgrade for Tornados of the German Armed Forces, overhaul and maintenance. Partnered with Alenia Aerospazio and BAE Systems.
  • Tornado ECR/Electronic Combat & Reconnaissance. Development and production of this dedicated version for the German Air Force (35 aircraft).
  • Tornado Reconnaissance. Based on Tornado IDS for the German Air Force and the German Naval Air Arm. Two dedicated versions of reconnaissance pods existing.
  • F-4 Phantom II. ICE (Improved Combat Effectiveness) program for the German Air Force accomplished, overhaul and maintenance activities. Contract for the complex avionics upgrade and SLEP program of Greek F-4s awarded by the Hellenic Air Force with program launch in October 1997 to modify of a total of 36 aircraft. Initial operational clearance (IOC) achieved in February 2001, final operational clearance (FOC) is expected for early 2002.
  • MiG-29. Logistic support for 23 ex-East German aircraft now in the inventory of the German Air Force in the framework of the MAPS (MiG Aircraft Product Support GmbH, Munich) Joint Venture with Russia, "westernisation" contracts plus proposals for other MiG-29 operators (e.g., Bulgaria, Poland, Romania).
  • AV-8B Harrier II Plus. Re-manufacturing of nine EAV-8B to Plus standard , with eight new EAV-8B Harrier II Plus already delivered.
  • Mirage F-1. Logistic support for Mirage F-1 of the Spanish Air Force.
  • Future Attack Weapon System. Design and technology studies for manned and/or unhabitated post-Tornado-generation offensive air vehicles. Furthermore, design and pre-development activities for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) for various operational purposes. To broaden the European scope in this field, EADS Military Aircraft actively participates in the ETAP (European Technology Acquisition) Program.
  • X-31 VECTOR Technology Demonstrator program. US-German joint venture experimental for evaluating thrust-vectoring technologies including advanced flight control and sensor systems.

in the transport / mission aircraft segment

  • C-130 Hercules. In-service support, including upgrade, of the C-130 fleet of the Spanisch Air Force.
  • C-160 Transall. Upgrade, overhaul and maintenance for the German Air Force.
  • C-130 Hercules. Upgrade and life extension for 12 aircraft of the Spanish Air Force.
  • P-3 Orion Maritime Patrol Aircraft. Life extension program for the aircraft of the Spanish Air Force.
  • Breguet 1150 Atlantic Maritime Patrol Aircraft. Overhaul, maintenance and logistics-product support for German Naval Air Arm, tasks performed by Dornier Flugwerft (DFW).
  • E-3A airborne early-warning aircraft of NATO. Overhaul, maintenance and modernisation programs for NATO's E-3A fleet under Boeing contract, partly in conjunction with DFW.

in the training systems segment

  • Mako, advanced trainer and light combat aircraft. Project for an high-performance trainer/lead-in fighter aircraft).
  • ATX. Pre-development activities for a trainer and light combat aircraft.
  • F-5. Logistic support for 22 F-5B of the Spanish Air Force.
  • C-101 Aviojet. Logistic support for 150 aircraft delivered to four air forces.
  • TAMIZ. Logistic support 40 aircraft delivered to the Spanish Air Force.
  • INTRAS (integrated training systems) for next-generation military aircraft like Eurofighter.
  • training of aircrews and military maintenance personnel.
  • simulation systems and ground based training aids.

In addition, EADS Military Aircraft is also involved in aerostructures manufacturing activities, e.g., by producing the rear fuselage sections for all Airbus versions (except A380).

With revenues amounting to EUR 30.8 billion and a workforce of 103,000, EADS European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company is the largest European aerospace company and the No 2 worldwide. It is active in the sectors of commercial aircraft, helicopters, space, military transport and combat aircraft as well as defence technology and services. Among others, EADS holds 80 percent of Airbus, 75 per cent of the space company Astrium, 100 percent of the helicopter manufacturer Eurocopter, 43 percent in the Eurofighter programme and 37,5 percent in the missile company MBDA.
