The new high-performance AS 365 N3 Version Part of the Dauphin Family

FARNBOROUGH AIR SHOW 2002

Farnborough, 22 July 2002

Eurocopter's new high-performance, twin-engine version of the Dauphin, known as the AS 365 N3, has a maximum takeoff weight of 4300 kg and meets the most stringent safety requirements for OEI (One Engine Inoperative) operation. The AS 365 N2, which will still be marketed as the basic Dauphin version, is ideal for customers seeking a modern twin in the 4-tonne category with the lowest operating and acquisition costs.

The AS 365 N3 excels by its capability to perform its missions in the most severe climatic conditions at altitude or in hot weather, and by its large power margin authorizing rooftop landings and takeoffs in urban areas in complete safety.

The N3 Dauphin is powered by two Turbomeca Arriel 2C gas turbines fitted with a Full Authority Digital Engine Control (FADEC) unit. The engines develop a maximum 30-second contingency power of 977 shp, up by 214 shp compared to the Dauphin N2 powerplants (Turbomeca Arriel 1C2) and providing 28% more power for even greater safety.

With its Arriel 2C engines, the N3 can take off out of the ground effect at maximum weight and at +50°C; it is also capable of taking off at +40°C with a full load in Category A conditions at sea level. And last but not least, its external noise level is 3.1 dB below the ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organization) standards, making it the quietest in the category (4 tonnes/11 passengers).

Thanks to its high performance, the AS 365 N3 can perform a wide variety of missions, including:

  • law enforcement and surveillance missions,
  • medevac operations,
  • port ship pilot transfers, the AS 365 N3 being one of the very few helicopters in the world capable of helihoist operations while hovering with one engine out,
  • passenger shuttles to offshore platforms,
  • VIP transport where the N3's fast cruise speed (280 kph), comfort and power margin are invaluable assets over its direct competitors.

The Dauphin N3 was certified in October 1997 and the first helicopter delivered in December of the same year. Customers meanwhile include: the ship pilots of the Port of Amsterdam and Rotterdam, the police forces of the State of Maryland , of Japan, etc.

With the Dauphin N2 and N3 and the EC 155 B, Eurocopter offers a medium-weight range of twins with common main components, thereby enhancing the family ties and advantages, particularly for logistics and maintenance. Customers can therefore optimise their fleets by choosing the version that suits them best.

And for the record, over 750 Dauphin/Panther/EC 155 helicopters have been ordered by nearly 125 customers in 60 countries. The fleet in operation has logged more than 3.1 million flight hours.

Eurocopter is a wholly-owned subsidiary of EADS (European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company).
