EADS Successful in Simulator SystemsFriedrichshafen, 02 May 2002
EADS European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company is going to deliver advanced driving simulators for the training of Italian train drivers. Dornier GmbH, a group company of EADS, has been awarded an order by Trenitalia SpA to install one training simulator in Florence and one in Milan. Another order has been received by the company from the Federal Office of Defence Technology and Procurement (BWB), covering the delivery of a second virtual air-defence trainer to the German Air Force. At the same time, BWB has also ordered the modernisation of a former dome trainer for air-defence training of the armed forces. As reported by Dornier GmbH on Thursday in Friedrichshafen, all simulators worth approximately EUR 9 million will be delivered by the EADS Business Unit Systems & Defence Electronics. “On the one hand, these orders open up the export business for driving simulators to our company and, on the other hand, prove that virtual reality technology is gaining acceptance at the German Army for training”, explained Dr. Stefan Zoller, Chairman of the Executive Board of Dornier GmbH and President of EADS Business Unit System & Defence Electronics. “Production and support of all simulators and trainers is carried out in the Operating Unit Airborne Systems (AS)“, stated Johann Heitzmann, Member of the Executive Board of Dornier GmbH and Head of the Operating Unit AS. Heitzmann also added that this order from Italy, in particular, was a special reference for further acquisitions, all the more so as Trenitalia concluded options for two further driving simulators. The new driving simulators for rail vehicles form part of a training and instruction programme for two of the most advanced long- and short-distance locomotive types of Trenitalia. The simulators of both vehicle types are equipped with original driver’s cabin, motion system, electronic sight system and an instructor station with computer for the display of different driving situations. Following delivery and test phase, the training will start in October 2002. The second new virtual reality (VR) trainer for the training of air-defence teams in the Stinger weapon system operates in “Cyberspace“. Both team members (team leader and gunner) wear special electronic goggles providing stereoscopic and acoustic presentation of the complete combat scenario in accordance with the respective direction of sight. After having received the first system integrated into an expandable container, the German Air Force will now receive a second facility which is firmly installed in a building. Thus, in the future, training and advanced training of air-defence teams can take place both in Wangerland-Hohenkirchen and at any site. The new system will be delivered at the end of April 2002. The training in various weapon systems for the air-defence teams of the armed forces is carried out in the dome trainer at the Army Air Defence School in Todendorf. The facility’s centrepiece is the projection system which is being expanded to comply with the latest state-of-the-art technology. It also includes projector units for three targets, special effects, landscape views, as well as the modification of the weapon simulators and a new instructor station. Dornier GmbH is a group company of EADS (European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company). With revenues of EUR 30.8 billion in 2001 and more than 100,000 employees, EADS is Europe’s largest aerospace company and world-wide Number 2.
