EADS TELECOM presents its turn-key secure communication solutions, based on commercial technologies, for Defence networks

Paris, 17 June 2002

EADS TELECOM provides powerful communication solutions to manage military information flows, from the home territory to the theatre of operations. EADS TELECOM is an integrator of turnkey military telecommunications solutions. It uses a range of technical expertise such as network architectures (IP, ATM, FR), telephony (VoIP, PBX), radiocommunication (microwave links (LOS), UHF/VHF digital radiocommunication), information systems, and security (cryptology and operational security).

To develop solutions for the defence market, EADS TELECOM gives preference to COTS (Commercial Off The Shelf) products to meet the need for wider pass-bands and interoperability between armed forces. These commercial products have the advantage of being more powerful, more adaptable, and less costly than militarised products.

From the home territory…

For day-to-day, local communication

EADS TELECOM offers solutions to meet the in-house communication needs of ministries, military bases and training camps.

  • Telephony needs
As the core of a military communication system, the Connexity M6500/Succession range offers a broad range of telephony services: conventional PBX, DECT, and voice on IP. Tailored to meet the demands of the Defence market, Connexity M6500 handles call priority and creates closed user groups.
  • IT needs
With its expertise in network architecture and its partnership with Nortel Networks, EADS TELECOM provides local computer networks adapted to military organisations. EADS TELECOM uses switches or wireless LAN products. The network offers effective logical protection: user partitioning, definition of user profiles and access rights, and network closing.
  • Security and logistics needs
EADS TELECOM has a professional digital radio telecommunications offer for security services, fire-fighters and maintenance agents of military centres. Using the TETRAPOL technology, Connexity M9600 offers group and individual communication services and data transmission services that are encrypted from end to end.

For strategic national information flows

  • Ensuring security
Network security problems arise when you communicate with the outside. For this reason, protection is required against LAN intrusion. With its expertise in security, EADS TELECOM offers firewall anti-intrusion products, Connexity M>Wall.
Information flows leaving the LAN need to be protected and encrypted. Several solutions are available and applied by EADS TELECOM, depending on network configuration: route encryptors, VPN ensured by Connexity M>Tunnel.
  • Interconnecting
To ensure a return on infrastructure investments in a network backbone, creating a secure interconnection between a military centre and the existing network is often an important issue. EADS TELECOM uses several interconnection scenarios and has the expertise to handle projects such as ATM voice transmission, IP encapsulation in ATM, end-to-end quality of service management, and end-to-end security.
  • Transmitting
If the network backbone needs to be built or upgraded, EADS TELECOM offers high-speed voice/data network solutions tailored to military requirements.

For these solutions, security is pivotal, whether it involves operational security – ensuring communication continuity in case of partial loss of equipment – or security in the sense of protecting the secrecy and integrity of the information transmitted.

The solution depends on client specifications and may comprise the following components:

  • Multi-service equipment that handles data, voice and video flows.
  • Optical transmission equipment: DWDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplex) equipment.
  • Satellite or microwave links: proprietary or operated satellite network, radio links, or LOS (Line Of Sight).

… to the theatre of operations

Projectable networks at the heart of the theatre of operations

Armed forces must carry out new missions. They increasingly handle missions beyond their national borders, such as rapid reaction and peacekeeping forces. The context is highly international and the missions often involve several armed forces. Under such conditions, armed forces need equipment that is quick to deploy and interoperable with foreign armed forces or civilian organisations that have their own equipment.

Theatre networks

EADS TELECOM has theatre network solutions that are particularly suited to new military missions. They are developed using COTS products, which are conditioned to meet operational requirements, whether mechanical, climatic or electromagnetic. Their security level is enhanced by adding protective or ciphering equipment.

The following solutions can be used in theatre networks, either separately or interconnected:

  • High-speed voice/data network: switches and routers in cabinets
  • Projectable secure radiocommunication network: Connexity M9600 in transportable cabinets or shelter
  • Conventional telephony solutions or transportable voice-over-IP solutions: IP PBX in cabinet

Tactical networks

EADS TELECOM has expertise in tactical networks. It offers two families of solutions:

Tactical networks based on proprietary technology

These tactical solutions are based on the following militarised products:

  • Tactical switches: MKS 200/300
  • Tactical LOSs: CTL 300, CTM 400

Tactical networks based on commercial technology

Tactical networks are also following the trend of incorporating a growing proportion of COTS products to take advantage of technological breakthroughs in commercial markets.

EADS TELECOM proposes an innovative and powerful tactical network offer. The network core uses COTS products, allowing a wide pass-band, full interoperability, and a unified information flow. The network links and inputs are generally based on militarised products to ensure a high level of communication security.

Track record:

As architect and integrator of fixed and mobile systems, from design, to deployment and support, EADS TELECOM works with the armed forces of several European countries and with the US Armed Forces.

Home country networks:

  • MTGT: Infrastructure network for telephony services of the French Army. A few statistics : 100,000 subscriber telephone lines, 500 PBX from the M6500 range.
  • STRICOM: professional radiocommunication network for US Army’s Simulation Training and Instrumentation Command. The system will supply equipment for use during training exercises at the U.S. Army Combat Training Centre.
  • SKYNET 5: military satellite communications system. EADS TELECOM is responsible for the British Defence for domestic and ‘out of area’ network baseband, cryptographic equipment and support system integration for the Skynet 5 global military satellite communications system.
  • BOWMAN: security functions for the British BOWMAN radio network program.

Operation theatre networks:

  • ATHREIS: EADS TELECOM is the main contractor of the French Navy telecommunications network. Supported by satellite transmission. It provides connections between French Navy vessels and military or civilian networks
  • CORMORANT: Theatre projected network for UK joint rapid reaction forces
