EADS Defence Electronics’ systems protect Tiger and NH90 helicopters – €200m contracts signed

Ulm, 15 March 2004

EADS Defence Electronics will deliver advanced self-protection systems to the Eurocopter Tiger and NH90 helicopter programmes in Germany, France, Italy, Australia, Portugal and Finland.

As announced by the company on Monday, Eurocopter awarded EADS Defence Electronics (DE) several contracts worth 200 Million Euros to deliver self-protection systems for the Eurocopter Tiger and NH90 helicopters procured by these countries. Deliveries will take place through to 2012. EADS Defence Electronics in a consortium with Thales will deliver an Electronic Warfare Suite comprising a missile approach warning system and a laser warning receiver developed by EADS DE in combination with a radar warner and the central processing unit developed and integrated by Thales as well as a chaff/flare dispenser from MBDA.

“The experience from recent conflicts shows that state-of-the-art self-protection systems are crucial for mission effectiveness and aircrew safety”, explained Johann Heitzmann, CEO and President of EADS Defence Electronics. “Our proficiency in electronic warfare enables the cost-efficient use of latest technology for this purpose”.

The helicopter electronic warfare suite substantially enhances the survivability and mission effectiveness of helicopters by countering, in addition to the radar threat in general, the increasing threat from missiles, particularly from man-portable infrared guided weapons (Manpads).

EADS Defence Electronics (DE) is a Business Unit of the EADS Defence and Security Systems Division. It is one of the most important manufacturers of radar, avionics and EW systems for all branches of the armed forces. Amongst other projects, DE contributes substantially to the procurement programmes of Eurofighter and the A400M transport aircraft. Moreover, the unit supplies electronic subsystems for a multitude of land-based defence systems as well as ships and armoured vehicles.

EADS is a global leader in aerospace, defence and related services. The EADS Group includes Airbus and Eurocopter, is prime contractor for the Ariane launcher, develops the A400M and is the largest industrial partner for Galileo.

EADS Defence and Security Systems, with revenues of over € 5 billion in 2003 and roughly 24,000 employees across nine nations, forms the defence pole within EADS. It offers integrated solutions to the new challenges confronting armed and security forces. It is active in the areas of military aircraft, missiles, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR), defence electronics, sensors and avionics, command, control and communications systems, and services. In order to optimise the decision-making chain from sensor to effector within a “System of Systems”, EADS brings together state-of-the-art information and network technologies and the extensive competence of an experienced supplier of complex defence systems.
