Coastal Surveillance Systems: Ensuring National Sovereignty

ILA/Berlin, 10 May 2004

Today, most countries are facing a new variety of maritime risks, which if continued uncontrolled, could become a real threat to the local economy and development. The threat has shifted from conventional neighbouring states to renegade organizations involved in smuggling of goods and people, maritime piracy (considered now as terrorism) and illegal exploitation of natural resources.

What the Coastal Surveillance System (CSS) from EADS Defence and Communications Systems (DCS) offers is a system that coordinates and ensures maritime border protection, effectively preventing illegal immigration and controlled goods smuggling. It also coordinates the maritime security forces who prevent acts of piracy and terrorism while still maintaining maritime safety in vessel trafficking and effectively coordinating search and rescue operations. Finally, CSS efficiently protects and prevents illegal exploitation of natural resources in and at the bottom of the sea as well as destruction of the environment while also providing interoperability to other systems for homeland security and military operations.

EADS has long been a key systems house for CSS. It is ideally suited for the permanent 24-hour surveillance of all coastal areas and is flexible enough to adapt to a variety of different users like the Coast Guard, Navy, Customs and private industry.
