Highlight Professional Mobile Radio PMR: TETRAPOL 2004.IP for public security and safety forces

ILA/Berlin, 10 May 2004

With TETRAPOL 2004.IP, EADS is marketing a new-generation digital radio system for public safety and security forces. Based on IP technology (Internet Protocol), this system provides significant technical and economic benefits. At ILA, EADS will present TETRAPOL 2004.lP in actual use (base station, control node) and provide information about financing and operator models.

For digitised voice and data transmissions, the system relies as much as possible on already existing IP-based data networks (IP backbone). Voice communications are no longer transmitted over a separate network, but are instead compressed and transmitted in the form of IP packets over the same network as other data. It is therefore no longer necessary to deploy, maintain and service several separate networks. Analogue and digital, wireless and wire-bound networks are readily interlinked by IP interfaces. For this application, EADS markets @CORE, the high-performance voice integration platform.

Advantages of TETRAPOL 2004.IP include:

  1. Lower infrastructure and line costs
  2. A single data network for radio communications and data systems
  3. IP telephony is possible over the same line network
  4. Existing data networks are included, such as intranets
  5. Applications are implemented cost-effectively
  6. Redundancy ensures high operational reliability
  7. End-to-end encryption provides a high level of security
  8. Optimised load distribution during peak times

The TETRAPOL 2004.IP radio system for safety and security forces provides all basic services: group communication, individual and multi-address calls, conference calls, secure emergency calls, direct mode – as well as handover, duplex and pager. Additional features that are provided as a matter of course include data transmission with database access and automatic position fixing with the help of GPS. The robust radio interface remains the same, and consequently, so does the advantage that few base stations are needed. TETRAPOL 2004.IP employs the latest Vocoder technology to boost voice quality and voice capacity to unprecedented levels.

TETRAPOL 2004.IP is the key to the integration of all communications media, and consequently the foundation of future networks for public safety and security forces. That's because this technology ensures the availability of all information on the same platform with identical security standards. Data and voice are available wherever public safety and security forces happen to be.

TETRAPOL 2004.IP is part of the broad concept of Homeland Security, the banner theme of EADS at ILA. Professional communications are a fundamental requirement for the national as well as international cooperation of safety and security forces. Without fast, secure and seamless exchange of voice and data information there can be no assurance of homeland security.
