EADS Astrium and Alcatel Space are commonly developing the Alphabus, a new European satellite platform for the communication satellites of the next generation. The Aalphabus platform is developed for communication satellites with a useful load capacity in the range of 12 to 18 kW. Such satellites are mainly meant for renovating the fleets of larger satellite companies, because on one hand they offer low costs per transponder and high mission flexibility. In addition this new satellite type enables the development of innovative services for the mobile broadband communication, the digital radio transmission (dab) and the high resolution TV (HDTV). The initial weight of the Alphabus satellites will move in the magnitude of six to eight tons and thus optimally utilize the capacities of the carrier rocket of latest generation. The platform has a series of equipment options to do full justice to the most diverse mission requirements. This also includes e.g. the possibility of using electric drive systems, but also the individual power adaptation of components like solar generators and radiators. The platform will be in the position to carry up to 190 heavy-duty transponders and very large antenna farms.
