International backbone of the aviation industry
With more than 133,000 employees, EADS is a strong backbone of the aviation industry and a major employer in the sector. Since our foundation in 2000, we have increased our total workforce by almost 50%. In Europe alone, EADS has since created well over 15,000 high-tech jobs, constantly strengthening its roots in the four domestic markets France, Germany, Great Britain and Spain. We are also fostering our international footprint in the U.S. and in emerging countries: our people work in more than 170 sites around the globe.
Popular employer
However, it is a challenge in our particular industry to attract the personnel needed. Statistics show that the annual demand for aeronautics engineers in Europe is 12,000 per year, but with only 9,000 coming out of the European education system that leaves a yearly shortfall of 3,000. Thus, it is a key priority to offer our employees an innovative and motivating workplace. Surveys by recognised market research institutes such as Universum and trendence prove that we enjoy an excellent reputation as an employer in all four home countries. In 2012, EADS has confirmed its top scores as “preferred employer” for engineers in our home countries. Already in 2011, EADS has stepped up among the Top 3 preferred employers in Europe. This gives us a head start to meet our recruiting goals. To spur EADS’ expansion we plan to make 9,000 recruitments in 2012, thereof 5,000 permanent employees and 4,000 temporary jobs such as internships, trainees or PhDs.
25% women until 2020
Therefore, we are taking various measures to convince the most promising talents to join our flight into the future. Aware that the knowledge of highly-skilled women is a valuable resource for our business we aim at lifting the level of women recruited by 2020 to 25% and the number of female managers to 20%: for example via the talent mentoring programme GrOW, or initiatives with associations like Femtec, Girls’ Day, Elles Bougent or the Airbus women network.
Attracting the best
Besides that, EADS promotes young academics: Through its Corporate Foundation the Group funds pioneering and original research projects. EADS is also member of several boards of engineering schools in and outside Europe. In 2010 for example, a partnership was signed with the “Ecole Centrale de Peking”. The yearly Airbus competition “Fly your Ideas” challenges students from all around the world to develop new ideas for a greener aviation industry. Last but not least the EADS Flight Book addresses the youngest high-flyers by nurturing children’s interest for the aeronautic sector.
