The three satellites Hot Bird 8, 9 and 10 are alike and designed to form the redundant core of Eutelsats prime video neighbourhood at 13°E, one of the largest broadcasting systems in Europe, delivering television, radio and multimedia services to Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. The satellites operate at a payload power of 12 kW and weigh about 4880kg at launch. The Hot Bird 8/9/10 satellites are based on Eurostar E3000 with a double deck communications module, a full-chemical propulsion system, solar array with four large panels per wing, and Lithium-ion batteries. They have a design lifetime of 15 years. Hot Bird 9 was launched in December 2008. Hot Bird 8, 9 and 10, each with 64 Ku-band transponders, have three times the capacity of the previous generation of Hot Bird satellites launched 10 years ago, and are the most powerful European satellites currently in orbit.
