EADS spends 80% of its total aeronautics research budget on ‘green’ technologies, as being eco-efficient is a major goal of EADS’ Vision 2020. Among other things, this strategic roadmap aims at maximising the benefits of the Group’s products and services while minimising the environmental impact of manufacturing and operating these products throughout their life cycle. In fact, certified environmental management systems have been progressively implemented across EADS’ manufacturing sites, and over 90% of EADS employees operate under an ISO 14001, an internationally recognised environmental standard.
Making the most of resources is key: alongside developing more eco-efficient aircraft and helicopters, EADS is 'building in' recyclability, demonstrating that 85% of aircraft components can be safely reused, recycled or recovered. The company is also pioneering sustainable biofuels, made from bio-mass feedstock. Furthermore, EADS is intensively working toward the goal of more sustainable growth in air transport by helping to modernise the air traffic management in Europe through the SESAR initiative.
