The continuous detonation wave engine (CDWE) is being evaluated in a programme involving Siberia’s Lavrentiev Institute of Hydrodynamics with the EADS Innovation Works–Russia operation of EADS’ Corporate Technical Office, supported by a grant from the Russian Skolkovo Innovation Foundation.

Ongoing work includes testing of a CDWE combustion chamber at the Lavrentiev Institute of Hydrodynamics’ Novosibirsk facility, providing an initial demonstration of the concept’s feasibility.

When incorporated on a conventional jet-engine, CDWE technology could transform overall engine performance and lead to a simplified design – improving thermal efficiency by some 25 percent.
