The current Aster family comprises two missiles originally designed as anti-missile missiles, capable of defeating all air threats. This family is characterized by a common kill vehicle and a booster (15 or 30) depending on the operational requirement. The ASTER 15 SAAM (surface-to-air anti-missile weapon system) is an anti-missile and anti-aircraft missile for warship self-defense and protection of nearby vessels, notably against sea skimming anti-ship missiles. The vertical launch gives 360 deg engagement capabilities. It is designed to meet the medium-range (30 km) air defence needs of navies, can operate in stand-alone mode, or be networked with the ship's combat system. The ASTER SAAM system comprises: a fire control system based on multifunction electronic scanning radar, with each module of the vertical launchers containing eight ready-to-fire missiles.
