EADS: Mobile field hospital from Dornier successfully tested during major Bundeswehr exercise

Friedrichshafen/Ulm, le 02  novembre  2000

Friedrichshafen/Ulm - Even when its soldiers are on missions in faraway regions, the German Army can guarantee them medical care of a standard they would receive back home. This was the conclusion drawn from a major construction exercise carried out by the German Army at the Leipheim airbase, during which the mobile field hospital TransHospital developed by Dornier GmbH, an affiliate of the newly founded EADS European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company, proved its unqualified suitability for use on missions.

During the exercise conducted at Leipheim a few days ago, the field hospital of the Crisis Reaction Forces stationed at Dornstadt near Ulm was for the first time tested to its full extent of 54 containers and almost 100 tents, including power and water supply. Specially combined elements of the Crisis Reaction Force field hospital had already been used on Bundeswehr missions in Bosnia, a unit of seven containers still is in service within Kosovo.

As EADS announced on Thursday, the system concept, which is based on the ability to flexibly combine the latest medical technology in various hospital cabins and tents and provide these with an autonomous power supply, air conditioning and other supply technology, has already proved to be of great worth. Stefan Zoller, Chairman of the Dornier Executive Board and Head of the EADS Defence Electronics and Telecommunications business unit, sees his assessment of the economic potential in this area confirmed: "The mobility and autonomy of TransHospital enables patients to be cared for to the highest standards, on both humanitarian and military missions. In this way we are able to meet the increasing requirements placed by armed forces and international organisations," explained Zoller.

At the same time Zoller pointed to the already achieved export success with the delivery of a 100-bed field hospital to the United Arab Emirates, where TransHospital has already passed the test under extreme climatic conditions. In addition, the combat support ships of the German Navy are equipped with a marine version of this facility.

The concept of a containerised mobile hospital as developed by Dornier GmbH is to provide an autonomous medical care system for use on medical support missions throughout the world. It consists of containers and tents which can be combined as required and transported by road, rail, ship or air to practically any site for use.

EADS emerged in July 2000 from the link-up of the three companies DaimlerChrysler Aerospace AG (Dasa, Munich), Aerospatiale Matra (Paris) and Construcciones Aeronáuticas S.A. (CASA, Madrid). With revenues amounting to EUR 22.5 billion, EADS is the world's third largest aerospace company.
